Daytime Northern Lights on Svalbard

The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis as it's also known as, is a truly uniqe experience on Svalbard.Yes, we do have it in the evenings as in Northern Norway. But in addition, and a phenomenon you will not see in any other populated city in the world, you may on Svalbard see the magic happen also at daytime!

This is obviously because we on 78 degrees north have darkness 24/7 for more or less three months from November to mid February. Knowing the fact that the most of the northern lighs activity in our location this far north is between 6 AM and 6 PM you'll soon discover the uniqeness of Svalbard in this matter. The "ordinary" evening aurora you may of course see in the evenings also in October and February.

The tour operators in Longyearbyen and Barentsburg offer a broad specter of Northern Light experiences, on foot, by snow mobile or dog sleds - or even by boat in November!

Better Moments #1 TripAdvisor 2016

During this Arctic evening, we will take you on an off-road hike in the outskirts of Longyearbyen. After the hike we will serve you a two-course dinner in our brand new "explorers club", and give you a short lecture about our arctic explorers.

Our guide will pick up at your hotel, and drive to the "old airport" outside of Longyearbyen. From here we will take you on an easy off-road hike, for about 4km to our unique venue at the fresh water pond. We will follow the old cableway that transported the coal from the mines to the harbour. During the hike we will have a fantastic view over the Advent valley, Hjorthfjellet and Operafjellet.

When we reach our private "explorers club", we will serve you a two-course dinner. The menu is the same as the famous polar chef, Adolf Henrik Lindstrøm served on his Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. Surrounded by arctic legends, this venue is the perfect setting for an explorer's dinner. During the dessert our guide will have a short lecture about the arctic legends and their expeditions. After an adventurous evening we will drop you of at your hotel.

Gift of the Polar Night - Basecamp Spitsbergen

Half day trip in the polar night, searching for the magnificent arctic light. The aim of this trip is to experience the arctic silence and the magical darkness, making the moon and stars shine so much brighter. And of course, we hope to see the Green Lady - Aurora, dance above us.

We bring you out from Longyearbyen into the polar night and the search for the magnificent arctic light. The aim of this trip is to experience the arctic silence and the magical darkness, making the moon and stars shine so much brighter. And of course, we hope to see the Green Lady - Aurora, dance above us.

As we drive out in Adventdalen we pass the old Aurora Station and your guide will tell you about the history of measuring the auroras on Svalbard. Our next stop is on the mountain Breinosa where the new Auroral station 'Kjell Henriksen Observatory' is situated. Up here, far away from the city lights, is the perfect place to see, and measure, the northern lights. We take a walk in the area to get a good viewpoint from the surroundings, turning off headlamps and enjoying the polar light.

Trapper's Station and the dogyard with 90 Alaskan Huskies is situated just below us, and we make a stop there on our way back. We go inside the warm cabin where warm drinks are waiting, and your guide will tell you about the trapper's life on Svalbard. The station is a replica of old trappers' stations and houses 90 Alaskan huskies trained for mushing. Here you get to see and feel how trappers lived in the wilderness, hunting seals and reindeer. The buildings and the surroundings at
the Trapper's Station are designed to look like the original hunting communities in Spitsbergen.

We end our trip with a snuggle time in the dog yard where our huskies will give you lots of hugs and kisses before it is time head back to Longyearbyen.Remember to bring you camera!

Three day expedition with dogsledge - Green Dog Svalbard

Three day expedition with dogsledge
This three day dog sledge expedition will give you a unique Arctic experience; travelling through the endless white in total silence, visiting ice cave and sleeping overnight in cabins.

We will pick you up at the hotel at 09.00 and take you to Green Dog in Bolterdalen. Here you'll be dressed in coverall suit, winter boots, hat and mittens and the guide will give you an introduction to dogsledding before we head off. Everybody will help harnessing the dogs and tie them to the sledge. The guide will drive in front with one or two guests on his sledge and the rest of the group will follow two and two at each sledge. Before we head out, the dogs will be very eager to go, but as soon as we've departed, you can enjoy the great silence, while viewing the fantastic nature of Svalbard. After about 2 hours of mushing, we will arrive at the ice cave.

Here we will enjoy lunch in a snow igloo and the dogs will have a well-earned break and a snack. After lunch we will explore the ice cave which goes far into the glacier. With helmets and headlamps, we descend into the cave. It has been created during the summer, when meltwater runs through the glacier. During the winter this water freezes, creating fantastic channels and artistic ice crystals in the clear, still air inside the glacier. No matter what the temperature is outside, the cave is at a steady -2°C.

After a tour within the glacier, we will experience the exhilaration of downhill mushing through the moraine and out through Bolterdalen. We will continue towards Foxdalen, where our cozy little cabin awaits. Once the fire takes off in the oven , the temperature will rise quickly , while we feed the dogs. If the northern lights or the beauty of the surroundings don't keep us outside, then we will spend a cozy evening inside enjoying good food, the warm fireplace and interesting mushing stories until it is time to creep into our sleeping bags. Sleeping bags, groundsheets and food is provided for you.

The following morning we will harness the dogs again and set off towards Janssonhaugen and the exciting and varied terrain which is found in that area. The wide, beautiful Adventvalley will decrease and we will see the mountains even closer as we follow the frozen riverbed into the land. Maybe we will stop for lunch, at the frozen waterfall north of Eskerdalen.

The goal for the day is Spitsbergen Expedition Lodge, a new and well-equipped cabin which is beautifully located in Brentskaret. From the cabin we can enjoy the wild landscape– a snow-covered universe where hunters and trappers have lived and hunted throughout history.

The lodge is with four bedrooms, a simple bathroom, gas cooking facilities in the kitchen and a great fireplace. We will stay here for the night. The next day we'll sled west. We will plan the day after weather and conditions, and try to make a detour into Helvetiadalen. The dogs are happy being on trail and we'll get to know each dogs and its personality, during the trip.  Upon returning to Green Dog, our guide will drive us back to town and we'll be  at our hotels between 15:00 and 18:00.

Our expeditions are always led by experienced guides, and the polar bears will be kept away by the dogs.

You do not need to have previous experience in dog sledding. No previous winter camping experience is required, just an adventurous spirit! However, you should be in average good physical condition to participate on this trip. The participants will be asked to help out with the camp, feeding of the dogs, preparations for the trips etc.

The weather in the Arctic can change within hours and it may be both cold and windy - even down to -5 to -10° C in May and June.

The guide will take care of the guest's safety, and will bring all necessary safety equipment.

Northern lights safari by dogsledge - Green Dog Svalbard

The Polar Night is a particularly atmospheric time of year, and dog sledding under starry skies, dancing aurora or glittering moonlight is an experience not to be missed.

After helping to harness the dogs your guide will lead the way out from the yards. The dogs will yelp and bark with impatience, but as soon as we get going a beautiful silence will sink over us.

The eager dogs will set off at a cracking pace, but after a couple of kilometres they will settle into a comfortable speed. We will drive with two to a sled, and participants will be able to swap between mushing and enjoying the scenery from the sled.

Out in the dark we will turn off our headlights, and after a short time the contours of the mountains will appear. Looking south, we can see that it is lighter towards the horizon. The snow covered landscape reflects light from the moon, stars and, if we are lucky, the northern lights - and it is astonishing to note just how much you can see in this magical period.

Mushing under the northern lights - Basecamp Spitsbergen

Dogsledding on Spitsbergen is a special experience, during the polar night the experience is unique. Drive your own dogsledge and join us for a 2-daytrip under the northern lights. Small groups give you a unique arctic experience!
Full moon trips:
Nov 11-16
Dec 11-16
Jan 10-15

The dogs are eager, happy and just as excited as you to start the expedition. Our guide will teach you how to mush your own team and then we are ready to go! We will make a lunch break on the way and let the dogs rest for a while. Before the evening sets, we will arrive in Reindalen about 40 km from the husky kennel.

DAY 1: You will meet your guide in the hotel reception at 10 am. We will have a short briefing about the coming two days, talk about the equipment and clothing needed. Then we will pack our bags into the car and drive to our Trappers Station, where our 90 Alaskan huskies are eagerly waiting to get on the trip. Dogsledding on Spitsbergen is a unique experience. The huskies are as eager as you are to get going. Our guide will teach you how to mush your own team and then we are ready to go! We will make a lunch break on the way and let the dogs rest for a while. Before the evening sets, we will arrive at the campsite about 40 km from the Trappers Station. Here we will set up our camp. After a warm dinner, we can climb into our sleeping bags for a good night's sleep. But maybe you are eager to stay awake for bit longer to see if the northern lights appear in the sky? Dinner and accommodation in tent.

DAY 2: At this time of the year, you will not wake up together with the sun. The darkness is continuous throughout the day. On cloudy days, you cannot see the difference between day time and night time, but on clear days you might see a hint of light and the promise of the coming spring just behind the mountains. Join us on the worlds northernmost fjord-cruise to Barentsburg, with a chance to experience natures own spectacular light show.
Svalbard is the only place you can experience the northern lights during the day. The daytime aurora is more red than what we normally see. Not quite as easy for the human eye to notice, but bring your camera, and you will be pleasantly surprised.

After about 2 hours we arrive in Barentsburg, the Russian settlement at Svalbard. The settlement counts about 400 people, but fully lit in the dark, it looks a lot bigger. The guide will lead us through the streets and share the history of this once quite large coal-mining town.
There will be an opportunity to visit the local hotel, the local brewery, as well as the souvenir shop where unique christmas presents from the top of the world can be purchased.

On our trip back to Longyearbyen, we get another chance to spot the luminous, and hauntingly beautiful, ghostly dancers on the polar night skies .

A warm lunch is served on the way to Barentsburg.
Marinated whale meat, baked salmon and pork rib is on the menu. Served with a pasta salad, rice , and our own locally baked bread.

Dress in warm and windproof clothing, and remember to bring your camera!
